Why lead needs care

Paint applied to Australian homes before 1970 often contains high levels of lead, and paint used up to 1997 can still contain some. When it is disturbed, the dust can be breathed in or swallowed. Lead exposure is linked to serious health problems, and young children and pregnant women are most at risk.

Lead dust is the most common source of exposure. Inside the home, most of it comes from chipping and flaking paint, or from paint that is scraped, sanded or disturbed during renovations. Chipping and peeling paint is found mostly on surfaces that rub or bump against each other, like windows and doors.

How lead removal is done

Lead dust removal means carefully removing lead-containing paint, dust and debris from a home, commercial or industrial property. Deteriorating lead paint mixes with dust and other debris and can be breathed in, so our aim is to reduce the risk and stop further contamination.
